About

Portrait of Isaac Kim I. KIM, EIT

I'm a Structural Engineering MS student at UCSD and an Engineer-in-Training at Hohbach-Lewin, Inc.

I am on track to complete my MS in Structural Engineering in the Spring of 2027, building on my BS in Structural Engineering from UCSD and BS in Engineering Physics from Biola University through a 3+2 program. I earned my Civil EIT in early 2026 and am planning on taking the PE Civil: Structural exam in early 2027, the next step to full licensure.

My academic breadth encompasses the design of steel and concrete structures (See Projects tab), and at Hohbach-Lewin I've learned to design timber structures as well, beginning with a design basis to submitting a final calculation package.

Outside of structures, I enjoy discussing philosophy, religion, technology, and am always looking to learn something new. "The unexamined life is not worth living" — Plato.

Experience

Jun 2025Present

Structural Engineering Intern

Hohbach-Lewin, Inc. — South Pasadena, CA

  • Modeled and ran lateral analyses in RISA-3D using ASCE 7 load combinations, seismic design forces, and wind pressures.
  • Designed LFRS — moment frames, shear walls, diaphragms — and connections (chords, collectors) for wood structures.
  • Sized joists, beams, and columns in Enercalc, optimizing structural integrity while cutting unnecessary cost.
  • Built Excel spreadsheets for pad-footing design, equipment anchorage, and overturning checks.
  • Produced calculation packages with structural plans, AutoCAD details, and traceable load paths via Bluebeam; logged ASCE 7-16 → 7-22 changes.

Instructional Assistant (Grader)

UC San Diego — La Jolla, CA

  • Graded weekly Structural Materials (SE 105) assignments for 150+ structural engineering students.

Engineering Pathways Intern

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — Los Angeles, CA

  • Inspected 7 large-quantity generators for RCRA hazardous-waste compliance (40 CFR §260–§272).

Selected Projects

8-Story Steel Jan – Mar 2026

Steel Structure Design

SE 140A · UC San Diego

  • Designed gravity load-resisting systems — columns, splices, base plates — for an 8-story steel structure.
  • Sized composite floors, columns, and moment connections per AISC-360 and the 4th-Ed. Seismic Design Manual.
  • Computed seismic and wind loads to ASCE 7-22; checked drift and ductility in RISA-3D.
  • Detailed special moment frames by capacity design using the Strong-Column / Weak-Beam philosophy.
8-Story Concrete Mar – Jun 2026

Concrete Structure Design

SE 140B · UC San Diego

  • Produced comprehensive design calculation packages for an 8-story concrete structure.
  • Designed two-way slabs via the lower-bound Strip Method and upper-bound Yield-Line Method, plus girders to ACI 318-19.
  • Analyzed cantilever retaining walls for sliding, overturning, and bearing-pressure stability.
  • Engineered shear walls and boundary elements to meet seismic and ductility demands.

Statics in Motion

Drag the load along the beam. The reactions, shear, and moment update live — the same first-principles statics behind every member I design.
